What to do if your meeting is on a Marae

What you will need to bring

If you are staying overnight, you will need to bring your own blankets, clothing and toiletries. You may find a small penlight helpful if you usually get up in the night, although most Marae have night lights. In the winter, warm socks will be necessary because shoes are removed for the duration of the time you are inside the whare nui (main meeting house).

All Marae have mattresses, pillows, sheets and pillowcases. You are not expected to bring food with you as this will be provided as part of your stay. You will usually need to bring with you money to be contributed as part of the gift (koha) but you should seek advice from your Māori Intermediary as to how much.
