What to do if your meeting is on a Marae

Customs and protocols

The customs and procedures (kawa) will vary from one tribe to another, depending upon what part of New Zealand you are in. For what to do, and how to behave, it is best to be guided by your hosts. To make you feel more familiar with what is likely to happened, we provide a general guide to some of the basic rituals and procedures of going on to, and meeting on the marae.

It is only natural to feel apprehensive when faced with a new and different experience, but hopefully familiarity with the sorts of things to expect and our guidelines on what do do, and not to do will help you be more comfortable.
