Maori Values - Introduction
Our philosophy is that the more you understand the values, beliefs and cultural practices of Māori, the easier it will be to consult and engage in a meaningful way. However, the values are sacred and need to be treated as such. It is also important to realise that the Māori world view is holistic and the values are the sum of many inter-twined parts. It can be likened to learning about a religion, where learning about the nuances of a religion, steeped in generations of tradition and knowledge, from discrete definitions of each principle, can not possibly do them justice.
Ideally, the concepts and theology of Māori values and cultural practices should be taught by learned and respected Māori elders (kaumatua), or group of elders, in a mārae setting. As an alternative, some organisations may wish to consider holding wānanga (training/workshops) on Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), with a focus on values. However Te Arotūruki have taken a pragmatic approach and in order to initiate at least some level of understanding, have prepared a list of what they consider to be some of the key Māori principles or values.
The list has been guided by consultation with Tangata whenua and ERMA’s Māori National Network. It is neither exhaustive nor meant to exclude any of the other values that other hapū/iwi deem important. As there are already numerous studies on Māori values, this kaupapa is not concerned with re-inventing the definitions of the core values.
