Maori Values - Founding Beliefs

All Māori culture and values are derived from the concept that the spiritual and natural world are closely linked with one another. This is largely through the belief that there is a direct genealogical descent from Io (the lifeforce of the supreme god) and Ira tangata (the lifeforce of humankind). In order to understand Māori beliefs and vlaues, and how they translate to traditions in the natural world, it is necessary to gain an understanding of Māori beliefs. While the main thread of the belief remains the same, often there are tribal differences which subtly change the details of the story.

Io created Ranginui (the sky father) and Papatuanuku (the earth mother). Papatuanuku gave birth to a number of supernatural beings, from whom all Māori are descended. All activities in the everyday world (and therefore values) are seen to be derived from this direct descent line between mortals and immortals

For more detail on the story of Papatuanuku and Ranginui, their separation and their descendants which were thought to be the beginnings of biological diversity, click here.
