What and who is this resource for?
Purpose of the Process
- This process has been developed by a multi-disciplinary team committed to achieving positive outcomes for Māori from science. These outcomes can only be achieved by building long term, mutually beneficial relationships between whanau/hapu/iwi and science organisations.
- Science has the potential to make valuable contributions to assist Māori development. The Te Arotūruki toolkit advocates for stronger links between Māori, moving into a post-settlement environment.
- This process is about two culturally distinct parties engaging in dialogue. To achieve a successful outcome, the process requires that ‘each partner sees the other as a peer and embraces the ideal of assisting each other in mutual enterprises’ (Royal 2002).
- It also views each party with different but equally valid world views, and requires mutual respect of each others’ world views. The process is informed by previous literature (eg., Cram et al 2001) that have identified impediments to successful dialogue.
