Obligatory Responsibilities

 |
Why is this Process Needed?
Obligatory Responsibilities
- Over the past decade, there have been increasing statutory requirements for scientists to consult with Māori, particularly in regard to legislative requirements under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.
- Other obligatory requirements include increasing awareness of, and adherence to, the Treat of Waitangi and the underpinning principles of participation, protection, and partnership.
- A more positive and compelling reason for scientists to engage with Māori lies in the additional opportunities that comes from successful engagement - engaging Māori in science is as much about maximising opportunities as it is about meeting any moral or legal obligations.
- Research and business partnerships, scholarships, and community development initiatives building good will between science and communities will provide an environment for respecting and fully utilising science and matauranga Māori knowledge creating a platform to take advantage of significant future R&D opportunities.
