DETAILS OF PROPOSAL STAGE
Should you Involve a Facilitator to Help? - Checklist
- Do you have, or are you some one who has an established relationship with the Māori entity that you wish to engage with?
- Do you have Māori staff member(s) or a team who understand the research proposal enough to present it in lay terms to Māori? For example, through experience in research themselves, or with knowledge of research funding and regulatory processes?
- Do you have people in your team who have a robust knowledge of Māori language, culture and protocols?
- Do you have access to people with excellent facilitation and communication skills who would be helpful in providing advice and facilitating the dialogue process?
- Do you and the science team have sufficient trust, knowledge and experience, and capacity to work through any issues that might arise around the research proposal.
If you have answered ‘yes’ to at least four of the above questions, then you are probably in a position where you have the necessary skills in your team, to have facilitate effective dialogue with the Māori entities who will be affected by your research proposal.
If you answered ‘no’ to one or more of the questions we advise that you enlist the services of a Maori Intermediary to prepare the scientists for the engagement process and facilitate discussions.
